Christ has no words of Condemnation for this suffering Church. This is the only city of the seven churches in which a thriving city still exists and it is called modern day Izmir.
With a strong Roman allegiance, and a large Jewish population, put together, resulted in a huge opposition against Christians, and these Christians really were economically poor as a result as they were ostersized from society, yet Jesus says that they are Rich (spiritually).
They are encouraged to be faithful unto Death and not to fear what they are about to suffer.
Just as Christ had begun with words of Comfort, viz- He is the first and Last, the Sovereign one over all of History. He was dead and came to life- which shows that faithfulness to death results in eternal life. This theme is also in the v. 11 as the Crown of life if promised to the over comer. All True Christians will be faithful unto death and receive this Crown. Our own London Baptist Confession of 1689, states in the first phrase of chapter 17 on Perseverance in 17:1a Those whom God hath accepted in the beloved, effectually called and Sanctified by his Spirit, and given the precious faith of his Elect unto, can neither totally nor finally fall from the state of grace; but shall certainly persevere therein to the end and be eternally saved,…
