One of the sights John Bunyan's pilgrims gazed at was Jacob's ladder. That incident in Jacob's life is a picture of Christian living. He realised that God was there though he had not known it. He could not treat God on his own terms - he had to adjust to an existing reality. It is the same at the start of the Christian life - our eyes are opened to another world, and we have to accept it as it is. The experience determined the course of his life. It was more than subjective experience. The reality was that God was at work in the world - his angels were ascending and descending on the ladder linking earth and heaven. So we live in an environment where God is active. Christ himself is the ladder (see his conversation with Nathaniel). He links earth and heaven in his own person. His blood has made reconciliation. He gives us the Holy Spirit; and he intercedes at the Father's right hand. Whether or not we have other experiences subsequent to conversion we live by faith in what we are now persuaded is true. Experiences need to be explained; and God spoke to Jacob. In calling himself the LORD and the God of Abraham and Isaac he was pointing out that he is the same in every age, and his covenant with his people continues forever. Jacob was entering into an existing relationship. This was more than a revelation of God - it was a special relationship being established. It was a mutual commitment that would be permanent and exclusive with agreed terms - similar to marriage. God gave Jacob a fourfold promise, and Jacob responded by accepting the relationship, trusting God to keep his promises, and promising to serve him.
