Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of Mormonism, was born to Joseph & Lucy Smith December 23, 1805 in Sharon, Vermont. Amble evidence reveals that Joseph's father practiced mysticism & treasure digging. He was also implicated in a counterfeit money scheme. Joseph's mother held to extreme religious & superstitious ideas & theories. Raised in this type of environment, the younger Joseph, who did not continue in school beyond the fourth grade, passed much of his time digging for treasures with his family. Besides dabbling in Freemasonry, he also adventured into freelance work as a fortune teller & peep-stone gazer or "glass looker" (one who tells fortunes with a crystal ball). Unfortunately for Joseph Smith, Jr., he was later convicted of a misdemeanor by Justice Albert Neely in 1826 for the unlawful practice of "glass looking" (for documentation see Jerald & Sandra Tanner's comprehensive book, "Mormonism: Shadow or Reality?" pp.32-38).
The career of Joseph Smith, Jr., as "God's Prophet" supposedly began in 1820 when he was 14 years old. While residing in Palmayra, New York, he allegedly received his "First Vision." He claimed he was praying to God as to which church to join when suddenly a pillar of light shone about him & two personages (God the Father & Jesus Christ) appeared & spoke to him: "I was answered that I must join none of them [the churches] for they were all wrong; & the Personages who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight, that those professors were all corrupt. He again forbade me to join with any of them." (from the 1851 Mormon holy book, "The Pearl of Great Price," Joseph Smith 2:19,20)
