The title of the message today is the Suffering Savior because we are going to focus on the sufferings of Christ this morning. As a church we need to regularly consider the sufferings of Christ because it is by His sufferings we have been saved. We need to remember the cross, remember the sufferings of Christ lest we forget what a great price was paid for our salvation. First we are going to consider the Depths of Christ's Sufferings and then secondly, the Vindication and Accomplishment of Christ's Sufferings. Psalm 22 is called a Messianic Psalm because it points us forward to God's promised Anointed King, Jesus the Christ. Psalm 22 was written 1000 years before Christ suffered on the Cross, but it is a prophecy of the crucifixion of Jesus.
The NT teaches that Psalm 22 is a prophecy of Jesus' death and resurrection. Jesus, Himself, quotes verse 1 while hanging on the cross when darkness came over the whole land. 1) The Depth of Christ's Sufferings – v1-21
V1-21 has six sections that alternate. 1st, 3rd, and 5th sections describe the author's suffering. The 2nd, 4th, and 6th are prayers to God.
From these verses we see 3 ways in which Jesus Christ suffered on the cross.
a) Abandonment – v1-2 b) Mockery – v6-8 c) the physical suffering-V12-18 2) The Vindication and Accomplishment of Christ's Sufferings – v22-31 Not only would Jesus be delivered by His resurrection and exaltation to heaven, but His sacrifice on the cross would result in multitudes of people being delivered from sin and death.
As He hangs on the cross and breathes His last breaths, Jesus sees all the present and future generations who would turn from their sins & follow Christ.
