Tony was on the streets of Davenport, IA, ministering with two younger brothers from his church--Donnie and Matt. Together, they were engaged in crosswalking, sign evangelism, gospel tract distribution, and chalk evangelism.
Chalk evangelism, inspired by 19th century, Scotish street evangelist Robert Annan, is simply writing Scripture verses or biblical truths in chalk, on sidewalks. The purpose is for pedestrians to see the verses and statements, repent, and believe the gospel.
The previous day, Matt wrote a series of gospel-related Scripture references in chalk, on a sidewalk, outside a local Roman Catholic Church. By the time Tony, Matt, and Donnie returned to the location the next day, the sidewalk had been cleaned. On this day, Matt wrote "Only faith in Christ Jesus saves" on the sidewalk outside the Roman Catholic Church.
A man who identified himself as the pastoral assistant for the church came out and confronted Matt. What followed was a 30-minute conversation during which Tony and Matt pleaded with the man to repent and believe the true gospel. |
