‘Who to follow’ has taken on new meaning in the age of Facebook and twitter. People follow friends or people they are interested in. People also follow a particular sport or political party. Who or what we follow when it comes to the ultimate issues of life is no light matter. Is it a worthy cause or person or are we being led up the garden path? Can we encourage others to follow the One we are following?
When the first disciples began to follow Jesus they were amazed that He knew them before they knew Him. They quickly responded with exuberant expressions of faith which led them to sometimes speak better than they knew. None the less, their initial encounter with the Lamb of God is powerful witness to the impact of Jesus on ordinary people. John, in writing his gospel, wholly endorses Jesus as utterly worthy of following, as the One who alone can mediate the power and presence of God to a needy and lost humanity. We do well to consider the testimony of John and his fellow disciples.
