In what strange world is there joy in hardship? Does God really expect His children to be glad that we've lost our jobs, fallen dangerously ill, or face ridicule and discrimination as Christians? James' admonition to "count it all joy" is one of the best known passages in the New Testament. Unfortunately, it is also often misunderstood. Our loving Father does not coldly demand that we muster up feelings of enthusiasm for hardship; such a life is dishonest and frankly, a bit weird. Jesus tenderly promises us that all pain is purposeful, and is used by Him to purify us so that we may serve Him more fully, bear His nature more clearly, and be ready for His return.
