Let us go back in our minds eye to the times of Ancient Egypt. Israel had endured a long and bitter period of hardship and cruelty as slaves to the Egyptians but this night was to be the night and the hour of their deliverance. We think of those poor slave families as they sat in their little homes waiting for God to move in and set them free. And as they sit there we read how in another part of the camp the Lord comes down to speak to Moses, the man God had raised up to be their deliverer. The Lord says to Moses 'This month shall be the beginning of months unto you: it shall be the first day of the year to you” Up until this time it is thought that the year began in Autumn because it is thought that God created man in the Autumn so that he would have the fruits to eat. Now God was changing the New Year to the month called Abib or nissan. So tomorrow when the children of Israel would wake up it was going to be a New Year,. And not only was it going to be a New Year but they were going to have a new life in the new year. Things were going to be different in this year. They were going to be free. The bonds and shekels of slavery were going to be thrown off. They were going to leave behind the bondage and the slavery of Egypt. This was going to be a glorious and happy new year for all these Israelite slaves. And it can be the beginning of months for you too, You can have new life for a New Year
