This class is the beginning of a series where we discuss the church as it exists in church history compared to the church as defined in the Bible. The discussion is based on an article I wrote in 2004 entitled "Redefining the Church" (CIC Issue 85). https://cicministry.org/commentary/issue85.htm
This first session focuses on the experiences of many Christians who love the truth and hunger for the pure teaching of the Word of God yet found themselves asked to leave churches which became part of the church growth movement.
The key problem is the reality that those who are born of God and are part of the church as defined in the Bible have entirely different concerns, needs and gifts than those who joined a seeker movement church based on the principle of "felt needs."
We introduce the theological definitions of the visible church and invisible church. The invisible church includes those who know the Lord because they have been converted through the gospel. Jesus is their Lord and Savior and they have an eternal relationship with Him.
The visible church includes those who do know the Lord and many others who attend church services. Some massive visible churches have very few if any who truly know Christ. We examine some passages in the New Testament which expound the essential attributes of those who truly know Christ.
