MATTHEW 6 Summary: We read how Jesus gives careful warning against hypocrisy about giving to the needy and gives rules to bear in mind (1-4). Then He speaks against hypocrisy in prayer (5-8). Then he teaches them how to pray, commonly called, the Lord's Prayer (9-13). After that He speaks to those who want forgiveness from God, that they themselves should have a forgiving spirit (14-15). Then He teaches them about fasting and warns them about the wrong attitudes and ways (16-18). He then goes on to speak against the evil of worldly-mindedness, and of desiring to have spiritual and lasting treasures in heaven (19-23). He warns that we cannot both live for God and possessions or Mammon (24). We are to trust in God for all things, and not worry about our daily needs, but to live for and put first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (25-34).
Devotional: (1) Is your life a blessing to others, especially those who are needy? Do other normally know that you give to others? (2) Have you felt your spiritual need and in what way has God provided for you? (3) Why not spend some time and write out the Lord's Prayer in your own words? Try to expand on the meaning of the needs and matters mentioned. Make it your own. (4) Think about the reason for fasting. In what way fasting helps us spiritually? (5) Are you more worried about what you have or what you are doing now? Are you anxious about daily things? Will you spend time and think about your priorities in life, and compare them to the birds and the plants that God provides for?
