It is frequently God's manner, when persons are seeking the blessing of him, to exercise them with trials of their resolution and steadfastness in seeking, before he bestows it upon them. To open and illustrate this doctrine, I would, first, observe that 'It is God's will, that in order to persons obtaining his blessing, they should earnestly and perseveringly seek it; and second, I would show what is intended by a trial of their resolution and {perseverance in seeking the blessing}; and third, what trials of their resolution {and steadfastness} God is wont oftentimes to exercise those that seek his blessing, before he bestows it; and fourth, give the reasons, why God is wont to deal thus with those that seek his blessing. I would observe 'It is God's will, that in order to persons obtaining his blessing, that they should earnestly and perseveringly seek it.
