I. Who is the strongman? The devil is the “strongman” but Jesus is the “one stronger than he” (v. 22). Verses 21-22 speak about the strongman — it is not merely a truism about everyday strongman competition! Verse 23 makes it clear Jesus is the main issue, you are with the strongman or against Him; you gather with Him or you scatter.
II. Why did the strongman come (vv. 20-22)? Man’s fundamental problems are threefold. ONE, his broken relationship with God because of his sinful rebellion. TWO, his own personal sinfulness (he needs to become new, born again). THREE, his alliance and bondage to Satan (he needs deliverance). Jesus is addressing the third problem! The other two are just as much necessary. III. How are we to respond to the strongman (v. 23)? IV. What are the consequences of not submitting to the strongman (vv. 24-26)?
