"And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him."
This is the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount
In the book of Acts the Christians were accused of turning the world upside down. But Jesus didn't come to turn the world upside down. He came to turn it the right way up again
The world has been upside down for so long that we think it's normal. Suffering and sin is such a common experience of life that we are tempted to think it's always been this way. But it was at the fall of man that the whole way the world works flipped upside down.
And Jesus came to flip it back the right way up. So Jesus is teaching here what it looks like to live the right way up which seems upside down only because we are turned the wrong way by sin.
When we trust in Jesus as Saviour he changes our life and begins that flip. And each day as we become more like Jesus by the Spirit we are being flipped the right way back up again. And when he comes again all thing will be made new.
So Matthew 5-7 is Jesus teaching the people of Israel what it looks like to live the right way up again, to live as if Jesus as King.
