In the days of the Prophet Isaiah, the word from the Lord was often one which addressed the sins and transgressions of the Lord's people. The context of our text is one which promises a future heavy judgment because of the pride of Judah and the pride of Judah's king, Hezekiah. The prophesy details that all of the emblems of the Lord's special presence and enduring blessing would be removed when the Babylonians looted and destroyed the temple. That is, the sins of the people and their leaders would be judged and judged harshly. Yet, the Lord would not have His people left without a hope for the future and consolation for today. Thus, our text reveals a message of comfort to those who suffer under the judgment of God. This message is directly addressed to the people of God, but is also applicable to the world in general. That message is that even though the Lord will and does punish sins, the Lord has provided for the consolation of the afflicted. That consolation is none other than the only begotten Son of God. This is the universal message of comfort. – Pastor Schlegel
