Our beliefs dictate our behavior. Romans chapter 12 begins Paul’s section on Christian behavior, behavior based on the beliefs he described in the first eleven chapters of the epistle. Because we’ve been justified by faith in Jesus Christ we’ll want to live a truly transformed life. That transformed life reaches into our personal devotion, our interpersonal relationships, our attitude toward authority, our commitment to unity within the church—these and other commitments of the Christian life that Paul describes in the final chapters of Romans. Romans 12:1-2 is one of the best known passages in the New Testament, a call to personal dedication. Total dedication to God is the only sensible response to His unbounded mercy toward us. Paul casts the concept of total dedication in terms of personal sacrifice, an act of spiritual worship.
