One of the issues causing division in the church at Corinth was whether Christians should eat food sacrificed to idols. St. Paul addresses this in Chapter 8 and carries it forward to Chapter 10. He looks at different settings and theological underpinnings to making decisions on whether or not a Christian should do something. While food sacrificed to idols may not be something of controversy in the Church today, things that can relate to it are-thus making this a very practical chapter for us to apply.
