Beginning with the calling by God, and appointment, of the Apostle Peter, we learn that some character defects, and failure, are not necessarily a reason for disqualification from holding office in the church. Though all of us have fallen, and sinned, God is still able, by His Spirit, to make us into the kind of people He want us to be. It is stated however, that immorality, adultery, financial misappropriation and gross breach of trust, are sins that would prevent men from exercising pastoral authority or eldership.
Peter became a changed man, with a lively grasp of God's Word. We too need to learn from his example, discovering Christ in all the Scriptures. To have office, we must be people of the Word, Scriptural people.
There are lessons to be learnt from dis-appointments, of which Judas Iscariot was one. Bad appointments are sometimes used by God to awaken and alert us.
There are no apostles today, but we are all called to be apostolic and faithful.
