One of the most famous martyrs of the ancient church was a man named Polycarp, a second century pastor. Imprisoned, threatened, and tortured, Polycarp refused to deny the Lord Jesus Christ and ultimately was burned at the stake for his faith. Polycarp lived in Smyrna and in his early days may have been taught directly by the Apostle John. The second church Jesus addressed in Revelation was the body of believers at Smyrna. This was a church that had experienced severe persecution for its faith and more persecution was heading its way, as was proven in the life and death of Polycarp. Suffering is ever present and never pleasant, but God can use suffering to strengthen us in our faith.
