The chapter we begin today is a particularly rich and deep chapter (John 6). It begins with the only miracle that is recounted in all four Gospel accounts, the Feeding of the Five Thousand. John, looking back on the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, and in light of the availability of the first three Gospels, seems to want to bring out and accent certain things.
He is selective in his accounts of seven or eight key miracles that are signs of who Jesus is and then he gives seven great discourses of Jesus in connection with those. We might ask “What is John's purpose in giving us another look at this glorious miracle?” We will see that John also gives us Jesus' “Bread of Life” discourse that explains to us what this miracle means. John also focuses on the issue of why so many Jews were rejecting the Messiah. The answer John gives is that Jesus was not the messiah they were looking for. They were looking for a messiah who would militarily conquer their Roman oppressors. This remains man's problem: God is not interested in helping us “making our lives work.” He is far too loving for that. He knows that the only thing that matters is you and me knowing and loving Him.
