Proper praise is always connected to trust, for we praise the one on whom we depend. This Psalm calls us to find our security not in the fickle and fading plans of men (or in anything else temporal and earthly), but in the eternal God of Jacob. He alone has proven his trustworthiness beyond doubt, for he is both powerful and willing to help those who cannot help themselves. May we never be found among the wicked, who distrust the author of life and find security elsewhere. Rather, let us remember our King's mercy to the weak and poor and needy; let us cling to the One on whom the Spirit rested, who proclaims good news to the poor, liberty to the captive, and sight to the blind! He alone is our stronghold and worthy of our unending praise and adoration!
