Thirteen years have passed since Ishmael's birth, and even more since God last appeared to Abram. It would seem that Sarai's plan worked and the promised heir is Abram's son by Hagar. But the Lord God Almighty dramatically appears and sets things straight. Abram again is assured that he'll father a multitude, with even nations and kings coming through his offspring. This will ultimately be accomplished by God himself, who emphatically reiterates the promise he intends to soon accomplish. To further testify to his faithfulness, God changes Abram's name to something more fitting to his future status! The grace of Abraham's covenant will continue forever and envelops not him alone, but all those who are his children. Let us learn of God's gracious covenant through these verses, for we too are children of Abraham by faith. Let us remember the majesty and power of our covenant Lord, for he will accomplish all his holy word. Such leads our souls to find rest in his faithfulness, now and forever!
