Nothing could be more offensive to a Jew than a crucified Messiah, and as Christianity began to rapidly spread after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus, Christians found themselves not only persecuted by the Romans, but also by the Jews – and it was because of the cross, that Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1:23 was foolishness to Gentiles and a stumbling-block to Jews. Even still today, the Jewish people scoff at the idea of a crucified Messiah and unbelievers still believe it's nonsense, so friends let us be ever reminded that the offense of the cross cannot be diminished or removed – and that's exactly why it has to remain the razor-sharp focus of our message – Jesus, the eternal Son of God, died in the place of sinners who deserve the wrath of God and are completely incapable of saving themselves no matter how good they are or how hard they try. Anything else is just not Christianity.
