As we've been working through the Creed, we have seen a lot of parallels between the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed.
Only occasionally is there a line in the Apostles' Creed that has no parallel in the Nicene. But this is most famous one!
"He descended into hell."
What does this mean?
Notice the order of the Creed: He was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; On the third day he rose again from the dead
There is a clear historical order to this: First he was crucified, then he was dead and then buried, at which point he descended into hell, and then on the third day he rose again from the dead.
Some have tried to say that the "descent into hell" refers to the sufferings of Christ, "especially on the cross."
But that's not what the Creed is saying.
Why do we say that Christ "descended into hell"?
Before we answer that, we need to make sure that we understand our terms.
