Does anyone here this morning claim to like camping? I'm not talking about touring the country in a 25' RV with a warm shower, wifi, and a dishwasher!
You know what real camping is … you leave your warm home, with dry roof, running water, heat/AC, big screen TV, warm bed, refrigerator, microwave, and stove. You put up a tiny tent on the side of a hill and live in the humidity or the cold or the rain and wind, with skeeters and tics and poison ivy. You stand around in the smoke and eat things that are half-cooked, or warmed up in cans. (Are we having fun yet?)
Why would anyone leave their house & put up a tent? But your Bible says Jesus pretty much did that! In John 1:14 we are about to read that, "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us." John's Greek word that we translate "dwelt" is literally "tabernacled," or "tented," among us." So Jesus stepped out of His heavenly home to put up His tent in the moral wilderness of women and men. Why did Jesus leave the glories of heaven & pitch the tent of human flesh & frailty? Christ camped with you and me so that we could see God in Him!
Return with me to John 1:1-18. John wraps up his Prologue by claiming that the eternal Word became a man and lived among men to explain God's glory and to offer us saving grace and truth.
The glory of the Incarnate Word is magnified in three relationships. 1. Jesus Exceeds John the Baptist (vv. 14-15). 2. Jesus Surpasses Moses the Lawgiver (vv.16-17). 3. Jesus Explains God the Father (v.18).
