The greatest impediment to people receiving the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the idea that good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell. That you can be good enough to be saved.
So hear me on this. Tying works to salvation in any way is potentially the worst possible witness we could put forward for Jesus Christ and the Gospel of salvation.
So what is our witness? That we are trying to be good enough?
What does that say about what Christ did on the cross?
There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. Proverbs 16:25 NKJV
If the greatest deception in the world is that we can save ourselves, then the worst thing we can do is support that at any level. To tie our salvation to human effort or action is legalism, Legalism is not safe, it is sin.
We are justified, atoned for, and Jesus is the full propitiation for us that we might avoid divine retribution. Period, no ifs or buts. Not that Jesus is partially sufficient for your salvation. He is fully sufficient for your salvation. You are receiving a free gift.
We can expect a reward for faithfulness, and discipline for disobedience. I am just warning you. DO not put your trust for salvation in works, ever.
You cannot do anything to earn salvation. If the price has been paid in full, what exactly do you have to contribute to paying that price? Where is boasting?
On what point do you get to beat your chest in heaven and say “I deserve to be here because……?”
