All his life, this man born blind had operated under a wrong paradigm. He wasn't a blind man amidst a world of seeing people, he had been a blind man amidst a blind world. Those who claimed to be able to see were in reality the blindest of all – for they were blind to their own blindness! It is here that we get to the heart of the purpose of this text. This blind man is in reality a “living parable” – indeed useful as a theological illustration (but not the one that the disciples imagined him to be)… Rather than being useful as an illustration of the destructive power of sin, this man is purposed by the Lord to be a lesson in the redemptive work of God!
I'd like to summarize John chapter 9 (while focusing on these last 7 climatic verses) with two theological statements which together answer the question: Who really sees?
1. All of us, by nature, as a result of the Fall, are Blind! 2. Only by God's Grace, working in redemption, can we See!
