This well known verse in 1 Samuel 16:7 is often misused by Evangelicals who tell us that outward appearances don't matter and that those who insist that outward appearances are important are Pharisees. This is not what this verse teaches. The meaning is that we are not to judge by outward appearances alone. " Thou blind Pharisee, first cleans that which is within the cup and platter, THAT THE OUTSIDE OF THEM MAY BE CLEAN ALSO. Matt. 23:26." The outside may look clean while the inside is rotten but if the outside is not clean neither is the inside.
