Jesus' practices angered the legalistic Pharisees at almost every turn. This time they joined those who questioned why his disciples did not fast like the other religious groups in their society. Jesus responds by stating a fact they all knew well - a wedding feast was not the proper time to fast but a time to share in the joy of the bridegroom. Jesus then uses the illustrations of the ripping power of unshrunk patch on an old garment and the new wine which burst the old wineskins to illustrate how the gospel would destroy the legalistic religion of the Pharisees. In the New Covenant all is new and exceedingly better. The Old Covenant is obsolete and needful of discarding.
