First the phrase in the Greek (pros thanaton) should be read, “There is a sin that goes towards death.” Again, in the broadest terms every sin takes us away from God and so every sin in some manner is headed in the direction of death. But John is making a distinction in the sins that people commit and suggesting that there is a course of sin that is in such a manner that it submerges the individual irretrievably into death and judgment.
