In Isaiah 9 the prophet speaks of the coming of the son – the one who would reign on the throne of David, his father, forever.
God had told David in 2 Samuel 7, "I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son." God was teaching David – and us – what it means to be a child of God. David wanted to build a house for God – but God says, no, it's the other way around: I will build your house.
The throne of David will be established forever. The son of David will become the Son of God.
Little did David realize how true that would be! But Isaiah seems to have glimpsed it – the name of the Son of David will be "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God..." And God himself ["the zeal of the LORD of hosts"] will make it happen...
