Christians should be the best citizens in any society. Because we’re citizens of God’s heavenly kingdom we have a better perspective on earthly kingdoms. Earthly powers exist under the authority of God. Therefore, we willingly subject ourselves to governmental authority as an extension of divine authority, at least inasmuch as human rulers don’t conflict with God’s higher laws. When we approach Romans 13:1-7, it’s natural to seek exceptions to obeying those in authority rather than focusing on the plain teaching on submission to authority. Human nature resists authority. But governmental authority plays an essential role in a world that’s dominated by sinful human beings. Therefore Christians, of all people, should respect and support governmental authority. Paul’s point in this passage is that, because God has established governmental authorities God’s people must be submissive to these authorities. Three key ideas drive this passage—submission, respect, and support.
