Aim: To grow in Christlikeness—as the church of God.
Doctrine: Every true believer is called to be an exemplary Christian. Though the ''bar'' is set low for admission into the church, all regenerate people are designed for greatness.
Exegesis: Some lovely traits of the exemplary Christian: there is a wholeness in a sincere faith in Jesus (vv. 17-21); there is a willingness to suffer for Jesus (vv. 22-23); there is a wondrous freedom to ''go all out'' for Jesus (v. 24).
Further application: How saved churchmen become more and more like Christ: by undergoing His cross and resurrection, whereby we are conformed to His image.
Key verse: v. 24 ''But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.''
