Paul instructs us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, not for performance's sake but for the purpose of providing evidence of the work of God in us. We tend to go to one of two extremes: either that of the passive person who simply lets God do all of the work, or that of the person who strives after holiness vigorously with self-effort. But in all of our striving, which we are called to do with the Holy Spirit's power, we are also commanded to do ALL things without grumbling, complaining or disputing, but instead hold on to the word of life displaying ourselves as bright shining lights to a dark world.
