Sermon given at the second anniversary of RBCKC's first official worship service and covenant signing. Prior to the sermon, the whole church family renewed their covenant vows. This sermon, then, was an exhortation to continue to love one another as a display of God's love.
The sermon from the rich text of 1 John 4:7-21 revisited a founding theme of RBCKC: "We Love...Because He First Loved Us". In the foundational verses of 7-12 God's sovereign and undeserved love is the basis of three exhortations to "love one another": God is love; God has displayed His love to us in Christ; and God is infusing His love in His people by His Spirit.
The next two sections detail how this love is outwardly manifest by His abiding Spirit. In verses 13-16 we are told of this love's abiding in us by His Spirit, while verses 17-21 describe love's perfection among us by His Spirit.
Therefore, a limitless and glorious truth is packed into that short verse 19, which reads, "We love because He first loved us". Unpacked, we see that "Because God is the source of all love and His essence is love He mercifully moved first to redeem us--a sinful, helpless, undeserving people--by raising us to life through His love manifest in Christ and infused by His Spirit so that He would gather together a people of His own through which His love would be on display to the world as they love Him and love one another."
