The final portion of the Christmas account sees King Herod slaughtering the infants around Bethlehem in an attempt to kill the baby Jesus. Pastor Stoos shows the contrast between the Covenant of Life and Salvation and the Covenant of Death in Adam. The contrast is illustrated throughout the Scriptures and clearly shown in Proverbs as Woman Wisdom and the harlot. Proverbs 8:35 declares with Jesus, that all those who hate me love death.
The battle between life and death began in the Garden of Eden, continues through King Herod's slaughter and down to our own age where Roe v. Wade has allowed the killing of almost 50 babies in America. We find that Satan is a powerful foe, but that he is a defeated foe and we must be ready and willing to call down God's judgments on him and his followers. Pastor Stoos explains that there is no “neutral” ground: We are either with Christ or against Him!
How should Christians respond? We must pray for God's protection, help those being led away to slaughter and pray God's judgment using the various imprecatory Psalms. We must see how God uses these Psalms to bring those in rebellion to repentance. The sermon closes with the example of Saul of Tarsus as one who God sovereignty and graciously takes from the Covenant of Death and places in His Kingdom and Covenant of Life.
