Introduction: o The title • Hebrew: eleh ha-devarim, "these are the words" or devarim, "words," for short. • Greek: deuteronomion, "second law."
o Outline • One of the interesting things about Deuteronomy is that it reads like the ancient near eastern treaties of the nations around them. ANE treaties had five parts: 1. Prologue—we see this in 1:1–4:43 2. Stipulations of the treaty ("covenant" in biblical terms)—we see this in 4:44–26:19 1.1. Ten Commandments in 4:44–5:33 1.2. Exposition of the Ten Commandments in 6:1–26:15 1.3. Epilogue in 26:16–19 3. Provisions for storing and reading—not included 4. List of witnesses—not included; instead there is a ratification ceremony in 27:1–28:68 5. Blessings and curses—we see this in 29:1–30:20 6. Deuteronomy ends with an epilogue in 31:1–34:12
