“ Eternal Security ” I think the Bible does clearly make the case for eternal security. John 10:29 reads “no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.” It doesn’t say “no man, except them themselves” – it says “no man.” Which is good, because if we could lose our salvation, we would. Pastor Hale indicated in the previous week’s sermon that we wouldn’t lose our salvation merely by sinning—we’d lose it by turning our back on God and walking away from Him. What is any sin, though, but the act of turning our back on God? One sin puts us in need of salvation—why should the standard be any different, assuming we could lose it?
You ask in the sermon the question, why would people keep living for God if their salvation weren’t losable. There are two very good reasons for this. First, if we’ve been saved, we love God and want to do His will. Even if we’re not perfect at it, which none of us are, the truly saved person will want to serve God merely because it pleases Him. Second, Christ promises in John to send saved persons the Holy Spirt. The Spirit keeps us desiring to serve after God. We don’t need the threat of Hell to keep us serving Him once we’ve been saved.
