Is it possible to be confident of God’s blessing in a world which is not always friendly? Peter’s unequivocal answer is ‘Yes’. Such confidence in God’s care is a strong antidote to the fear that could so easily disable. We need not cave in to the evil that is so prevalent. Whilst our eyes are to be on our eternal home we must not be overcome by pessimism and terror in the present.
The blessing of ‘good days’ is not simply a product of chance, but God's promise to the faithful fulfillment of our calling to live compassionately and humbly, not repaying evil with evil but with blessing. This does not guarantee trouble free existence because ‘suffering for what is right’ is a part of our calling. But with such suffering we can have great expectation of God’s goodness, not only in our future inheritance but here and now in our present circumstances. Not only that, but sanctifying Christ as Lord over this life, knowing there is no part of the creation that does not belong to Him, gives us the gentle boldness to respond to a world that cannot makes sense of the hope that sustains us.
