In this 1st of 8 sermons on 8 hate attacks against the traditional values of Christian marriage Gavin addresses the issues of religiously mixed marriages between Protestants & non-Protestants, & incest with respect to Biblical prohibitions on marriages with in-laws by affinity such as e.g. sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, or aunts by affinity; in special connection with marriage with a deceased brother's wife & the annulment of the union between Henry VIII & Catherine of Aragon as part of the English & Irish Reformations. Gavin isolates the rise of the secular state with its undermining of the values of the Protestant Christian State on these issues & focuses more on the Type 1 Secular State that existed from the 18th & 19th centuries till the end of World War II which in general though not absolute terms upheld Protestant Christian morals in law & society, though in formal legal & political discourse justified such morals on the basis of natural law or reason. This was subject to a commitment to religious liberty that allowed violations of the 1st & 2nd precepts of the Ten Commandments (Exod. 20:2-6); & was also anti-supernaturalist. Under the Type 1 secular state the 1st hate attack of religiously mixed marriages was legally allowed in connection with religious liberty;& the 2nd hate attack of certain incestuous marriages was allowed in connection with anti-supernaturalism, which did not recognize that God slew the children of Henry VIII & Catherine of Aragon in harmony with his reserve right of Lev. 20:21 (which he does not always exercise e.g. Herodias's daughter, Mark 6:22), "if a man shall take his brother's wife it is an unclean thing ...; they shall be childless."
