Great Sermon! This beautiful exposition of Luke 10:38-42 shows the nature of true Christian service. Jesus did not criticize Martha for showing hospitality, but for allowing work to eclipse what would have brought Christ more delight and honor: her love, her worship, and her eagerness to sit at His feet and hear His word. When service and good works become an end in themselves and don't flow from love and delight in Christ, when time in His presence takes a back seat to "getting the job done", or when we labor mainly to win the praise of men, then "service" becomes a burden that distracts us from Christ and may even, as with Martha, lead to frustration and anger with Christ, if we blame Him for the weight of a cross He never laid upon us. The labor God rewards is directed towards Christ in love; it is the overflow of our worship and will deepen rather than hinder our fellowship with Him. Mary of Bethany got it right! Christ Himself is our portion, and His promise to her that the good part she had chosen would not be taken from her is His promise to all who make love for our Savior and time in His presence and His word the foundation of their service to others. What we do in union with Christ is what truly glorifies God and brings life and blessing to others, and to our own souls as well.
