While dealing with the whole of vs. 9-11 in the context of the repentance of the Corinthians, the sermon focuses on the words in v. 10 "Godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation". The sermon is in three parts: 1) What is godly sorrow?; 2) Godly sorrow produces repentance; and 3) Godly sorrow produces fruits that demonstrate the truth of one's repentance. The sermon stresses that godly sorrow is the root from which true repentance springs and is an integral part of repentance (a truth much neglected today). There is also a shallow kind of godly sorrow which does not lead to salvation: the sorrow which proceeds from worldly considerations.
