When we look at the lives of people in the Old Testament we are looking at what life is like with, and without, the guidance of the Holy Spirit of God. Under the New Covenant believers have the indwelling Spirit of God, the Comforter, to guide us into all truth, and lead us through life in this world. The people in the Old Testament did not have this benefit, which Jesus made possible for us in this age through his death and resurrection. So we must recognize this truth as we study the lives of people like Abraham and others, and then take heart in the greater light that we enjoy now. Then we should ask ourselves if we are a New Testament Christian walking after the Spirit, or if we are living like an Old Testament saint without the Spirit of God living within us.
