Peter is addressing the Jewish believers who were forced to flee Jerusalem, when a great persecution began on the day that Stephen was stoned to death. After stating the wonderful things that the believer has been given in Christ, we now see that these things are the foundation for our rejoicing in the Lord always, even when we are experiencing the various trials of living as believers in a hostile world. As God works the work of refining through these various trials, we learn the wonderful benefits of being tried or refined by fire. Not only are there benefits in time to this refining, but the end result is there are wonderful things waiting in the form of rewards given at the judgment seat of Christ. Conversely we will also be judged as to our failures as believers, though this will not in any way damage our justification in Christ. And all of this is true, because we trust in the One Whom we have never seen but we believe in Him and love Him.
