STRIVING FOR THE KINGDOM, PART 5 TEXT: Luke 16:19-31
SUMMARY: In two parables dealing with worldly wealth, Jesus brings to light the sins and eternal dangers associated with an improper attitude towards one’s earthly possessions.
I. EARTHLY POSSESSIONS POSE A TEMPTATION TO SIN (Luke 12:13-21). 1 Tim. 6:9, “many foolish and harmful lusts” includes the problems of worldliness, covetousness, pride, presumption, selfishness, and unbelief. II. EARTHLY POSSESSIONS ARE NOT THE TRUE RICHES (Luke 21:1-4). The nature of true riches is a matter of appearance vs. reality.
III. EARTHLY POSSESSIONS POSE A GREAT DANGER TO THE SOUL (Luke 16:19-31).
EXPOSITION OF THE PASSAGE A. The Habits of Earthly Life, vv. 19-20. B. The Certainty of Death, v. 22. C. The Certainty of an Afterlife, vv. 23-28. D. The Duty of Man, vv. 29-31.
