In Matthew's account of the nativity, he makes no reference to geographic location until he comes to the story of the wise men. Even then, he states Christ's place of birth in stride. His language is unusual. However, the way he presents Christ's birthplace is consistent with his purpose and linked directly with the fulfillment of prophecy. While the birthplace of the Messiah was common knowledge among the Jewish leaders and a mere morning's walk from Jerusalem, they put forth no effort to welcome the Messiah. Yet, pagan wise men from hundreds of miles away, at a great expense, searched diligently for Jesus.
