Adoption: A Biblical Option January 24, 2010 Sermon Galatians 4:1-7
As God's adopted children, we must be a family to orphans & unwanted children. We must understand our status as spiritually adopted children Status prior to our adoption—in “slavery” (Gal 4:1-3, 7) Current status—adopted into God's family (Gal 4:3-7) Future status—to be adopted at the redemption of our bodies (Rom 8:23) Application to earthly adoption We must recognize God's plan in our adoption Cause—God's sovereign will (Eph 1:4-5) Purpose—the praise of the glory of His grace (Eph 1:6) Application to earthly adoption We must appreciate the cost of our adoption The Father sent the Son to redeem us (Gal 4:4) The Father sent the Spirit to generate our affection for Him (Gal 4:6) Application to earthly adoption We must value the results of our adoption Love (Eph 1:4-5) Belonging (1 Cor 12:7, 12—“brothers and sisters”) Fatherhood (Abba, Father—Gal 4:6; Matt 6:9) Identity (“in Christ”—Eph 1:4, 11, 13; 3:6) Inheritance (legal standing: adoption “as sons” Rom 8:17) Freedom from fear (Rom 8:15) Fellowship in the family (sense of community—Acts 2:42)
