It is that time of year when we again celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the God-man. In every conceivable way, Jesus is unique. He is unparalleled and unprecedented. This is why the inspired prophet Isaiah said that His name should be called “Wonderful” (Isa. 9:6)!
The Apostle John is the only inspired writer who used the term “only begotten” to designate the Son of God. (The Greek means that Jesus is the only one of His kind in His relation to God). Because Jesus Christ is unique in so many ways, He is called by many names in the Bible – each of them transcendently beautiful.
The majestic figure of Jesus Christ towers above all the great thinkers and founders of the world's religions. His claims are imperious. The evidence for Christ does indeed “demand a verdict.” The only appropriate response for us is to do as Thomas did and fall at His feet, confessing, “My Lord and my God.” There is no one in history like our blessed Lord Jesus. O come, let us adore Him!
