In Isaiah 56:1–8, we are shown 4 characteristics of Yahweh's covenant community. I. Yahweh's covenant community is evidenced by obeying Yahweh's commands. A. Keep justice (v. 1a). B. Do righteousness (v. 1b). Why? Salvation is coming (v. 1c, d). C. Keep the Sabbath (v. 2c). D. Do no evil (v. 2d). Why? You will be blessed (v. 2a, b).
II. Yahweh's covenant community is expanded by Yahweh's inclusiveness: outcasts are now welcomed. A. The foreigner is welcome (v. 3a, b). B. The eunuch is welcome (v. 3b, c). III. Yahweh's community is given Yahweh's blessings for covenant obedience. A. The eunuch who holds fast to the covenant will be blessed with the family's name (v. 4–5). B. The foreigner who holds fast to the covenant will be blessed with the family's worship (vs. 6–7)
IV. Yahweh's community is built by Yahweh's faithfulness to his promises. A. I gathered the outcasts of Israel (v. 8a, b) … B. And I will gather others as well (v. 8c, d).
