Jesus encouraged his disciples to be tenacious in fighting sin (Matt. 5:21-22; 27-30). The benefit of confessing and dealing with sin when it is small (relatively speaking) is that we don't allow it to grow. So, for example, anger or hatred will not lead to murder, lust will not become adultery.
