Few care to read stories of disaster where all ends in total loss. We much prefer rescue stories like that of Dunkirk. Out of the teeth of disaster, there was a great deliverance. It a salvation story. Such is Paul's message, the Gospel (1.16b).
I. The Gospel preacher
A. Paul's readiness to preach the Gospel.
B. Paul is ready because he is unashamed. When we are ashamed we keep quiet. 'The least said the better' becomes our policy. Remember Paul's exhortation to Timothy (2 Timothy 1.8-12).
LESSON. Let us be like lions in the defence of the faith for 'the wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion' (Proverbs 28.1).
II. The Gospel power
A. The power of the Gospel - 'the power of God'.
B. The effect of the Gospel - 'salvation'.
C. The universality of the Gospel - to Jew and Greek.
LESSON Spiritual Christians have the most wonderful privilege of bearing witness to Christ as Redeemer that those who believe might be saved, for the power of God IS in the Gospel.
III. The Gospel message
Why is the Gospel so powerful unto salvation? Paul explains Justification by faith is the heart of this epistle and the heart of the Gospel.
CONCLUDING LESSON. 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved'.
